Pilgrimage to Holy Door of Trappist Haven Monastery

Saturday 1/10/16

This was our first pilgrimage in year 16-17 of Serra Club. We were fortunate to join Fr Tsang's congregation to visit the Holy Door of Trappist Haven Monastery now known as Our Lady of Joy Abbey. We were 41 including families and friends out of a total of 179 pilgrims on board the ferry to Tai Shui Hang on Lantau Island. Some of us went there before but this time was extra special as we were able to enter its Holy Door in The Jubilee Year of Mercy. Red rain warning was announced early in the morning but the sky cleared up before we left. We were destined to have a smooth journey thanks to Our Lord.

On arrival, we made the 14 Stations of the Cross along the path which led to the Church. We were then greeted by Fr Chuang. After the special prayers and hymns, Father showed us slides on how The Trappist Church came to be. A bare piece of land leased to the Order by the HK Government in 1951 where the Church is today. This monastery is the home of 18 priests. It also has a guest house for retreat. The priests came from different parts of China and HK; one came from America. They are up at 3 am and retire around 9pm. The priests celebrate Mass each morning at 7am; 10:30am on Sunday for their parishioners. These priests are self sufficient. They cook, sew and grow their own vegetables. They make cookies and candles too. Used to produce cow's milk on site but now they have a private firm as their partner who takes care of that business for them. After the Angelus and a group photo, we headed back to the ferry to Lamma Island for lunch. That concluded an amazing visit to one of the holy doors. It was truly a spiritually enriched experience.
